Ocean on The Brain

Hi friends,

My latest painting series features my love for the ocean, living near it in Central Florida,

and being concerned over the health of our oceans.

Also, I wanted to return to painting with a trowel and palette knife. It was quite freeing not working with a paintbrush and learning how to give up control of some of the mark making.

Hello Readers,

My name is Laura Knapik Bohn and I have been a working artist for many years.

I also teach art and in 2014 received a masters degree in art therapy.

To make it as an artist, I have found I need to not only sell artworks but share art processes through mindfulness techniques in arts and wellness and art therapy.  I also teach traditional art classes and children’s art classes.

I am having a summer painting sale.  Either free shipping for those of you out of the Central Florida are and for those of you in the Central Florida area I can give you a discount on a painting of your choice.

Check out the below link.

This sweet little painting is 11 x 14 .  I have been really into this color scheme with the reds, ochres and turquoise.

Check out artwork available.

Since I have written this blog, the above painting is now sold.

thank you

The Art of Creating Art

Hi guys,  just wanted to share some of the work I have been doing.

As a professional artist, I have exhibited in galleries, shows and a couple of museums.

I enjoy creating large and small paintings that are highly.  detailed high end work for special exhibits.  I also enjoy creating quicker fun studies that are more affordable for many people.  For quite awhile I struggled to understand my need to create both.  While I labor for many weeks or months or over some of my work that is especially made for galleries or other exhibits I also create quicker smaller paintings that are more affordable.  Enter Etsy! I have been able to do just this here.  I have enjoyed selling 15 paintings on Etsy of far.

This little 9 x 12 acrylic painting is titled Leaf Love. It is ready to hang with painted gallery wrapped edges. It is a good example of a small affordable painting I just created for sale on my Etsy Store where you can shop at  Lauraspaintbrush

I have a coupon code for free shipping here so just plug it in at purchase time springgifttoyou16  offer ends May 14th, 2016

So, now a little on the process or the art of creating art!

For this particular piece, I first played with colors that attracted me. Reds, iron oxide, yellow ochre.  Once I had a fun background I found some blue greens that were complimenting the colors and added them along with a little colored tissue paper.  The leaf study came from the curve of a plant in my yard.   Nature is always a constant inspiration for me even in a modern painting.   The contrasting black and whites came after I drew out the vine.

A little about movement.  I love to show a line here or there that moves around the canvas to suggest movement.  It can be a brush stroke or line to enhance the painting.

So please come check out more of my work here at lauraspaintbrush

Sharing the Processes I love

 Hi You Guys!
Since I have been teaching Intuitive Painting I have learned so much and yet I
am still a beginner. How could that be?
Painting intuitively starts with boldly playing on canvas and letting the painting arise.
Abstract Expressionists have known this for a long time.
Carl Jung worked this way.
All that you need is a canvas or board and some acrylic paint. First layer, simply
make marks in all cool colors or all warm.
If you want to know more leave a comment and I will write more!

The Art of Self Discovery

 Intuitive Painting

How do you express your creativity while expressing your authentic self?

Do you write poems, cook, garden, run marathons?  While doing certain activities that we are in a state of grace or flow doing, we enter a relaxed state where answers to our lives may become available.

If I am paying attention to the moment of applying a turquoise wash and how it flows on the surface, I can later reflect on what it means in my life.

I step back and realize how nature has the ability to sooth me.  I think of swimming in the turquoise springs and how I can balance my life.

This moment to moment awareness and stepping back to reflect is a constant dance in understanding authentic self expression.

What do I do if my paintings are representing ugly emotions?  I also observe those emotions and let them go by. I can take a break and learn why I am experiencing those emotions.

Then continue on and let some of the layers of those angry or fearful emotions show through in my work or continue on and paint over them.

There is no right or wrong way to paint intuitively.

What if you are a trained artist who  is constantly critiquing your own work?

Intuitive painting works for both non-artists and trained artists. Why?

I recently painted a commission of a horse in which frustration was a part of creating a quality based artwork.   I remember thinking I just wantunnamed-3 to play with paint and need a break from this hard work.  So, that is why I would put the horse painting to the side and pick up a blank canvas and play.

Playing with paint was exactly what I needed to bring back my sense of joy and to work through emotions.

Another way this can work is when you have artist’s block and don’t know what to paint.

If you are a painter, there is no excuse not to paint if you do not know what to paint as you can simply play with paint.

I use acrylic paints to play as they dry quickly and I can keep layering them.

If you have tried this type of painting let me know your thoughts.  Intuitive painting or process painting is a method used by art therapists and healing artists. Some abstract painters also have discovered this through experimentation.

I am presently facilitating intuitive painting workshops at the Atlantic Center for Arts Harris House in New Smyrna Beach, Florida every Saturday in February of 2016 as part of their community outreach art and wellness program.

For details & registration call 386-427-6975 x: 23 or ktimmons@atlanticcenterforthearts.org. Classes will be $15 for materials

METAPHORA

Here is my first assemblage art piece that I am happy with. As a painter, I mostly create paintings but was asked to make an assemblage art piece with salvage junk and this is what I came up with.

When I put the junk together I needed a head and low and behold I found a clay head I made in college and it fit perfectly.
